“Jane Eyre” – Social Rejection and Final Success

Authors

Abstract

Jane Eyre is not an ordinary depiction of the19th century Britain as its main character is female and it deals with serious social issues in 19th century British society. The condition of women in Victorian England was one of inequality and oppression. Women were not given equal rights and were expected to get married and surrender most of their identity to their husbands. This was especially true for women in the lower classes, who were looked down on by society and expected to serve those who were wealthier. Jane Eyre, written by the female novelist Charlotte Bronte, originally under a male pseudonym, showed the conditions of one lower-class woman at that time as she attempted to realize her ambitions, dreams, and desires. Jane's character illustrated the problems of the era surrounding lower-class women at that time, primarily their lack of independence from men and lack of respect from society, and ultimately gave an example of one woman who was able to overcome immense social and cultural obstacles.
